What is the most accurate breathalyser for personal use in Australia?

How accurate are AlcoLimit Breathalysers?

AlcoLimit Breathalysers are certified to Australian Standard AS3547:2019 and AS3547:2023 and have an accuracy level of +/-0.005 at 0.100 %BAC at 25°C. The electrochemical fuel cell sensor technology used in all AlcoLimit Breathalysers is independently tested for accuracy and durability prior to release on the Australian market.  

For the most reliable results, always follow the manufacturer's instructions, wait at least 20 minutes after drinking before testing and keep your breathalyser properly calibrated.

What is the difference between a fuel cell sensor and semiconductor sensor breathalyser?

The main difference is the sensor technology used to detect alcohol. Electrochemical fuel cell sensors are designed specifically to detect alcohol and generally provide greater accuracy and stability than semiconductor sensors.

Semiconductor breathalysers (a very old technology) can be suitable for occasional personal use, while fuel cell breathalysers are generally preferred for frequent testing, greater precision and professional applications.

AlcoLimit Breathalysers only supplies products that use fuel cell sensor technology.

How long should I wait after drinking before using a breathalyser?

You should wait at least 20 minutes after your last alcoholic drink before using a breathalyser.

Testing too soon can allow residual alcohol in the mouth to affect the reading and may produce an inaccurate result. It can also expose the sensor to a high concentration of alcohol. Additionally, there may still be alcohol in your stomach that hasn't been absorbed into your blood stream so you alcohol level can contunue to rise.

For the most reliable result, wait at least 20 minutes and follow the testing instructions supplied with your AlcoLimit breathalyser.

Can a breathalyser tell me if I am safe to drive?

A personal breathalyser can provide an indication of your BAC, but it should not be used as a guarantee that you are safe or legally permitted to drive.

Alcohol affects everyone differently, and your BAC can continue to rise after you have stopped drinking. Other factors can also affect BAC and driving ability.

If you have been drinking, the safest option is not to drive. Never rely solely on a personal breathalyser to make a decision about driving.

What is the legal BAC limit for driving in Australia?

The legal BAC limit depends on your state or territory, licence type and driver category. A 0.050 BAC limit applies to many fully licensed drivers, but some drivers—including learner, provisional and certain professional drivers—may be subject to a zero BAC limit.

Always check the current rules that apply to your licence and location. A personal breathalyser is a useful testing tool, but it does not replace Australian road laws.

How often does a breathalyser need to be calibrated?

Calibration requirements depend on the breathalyser model and how frequently it is used.

For example, the AlcoLimit Stryker is recommended for recalibration at least every 12 months or 500 uses, whichever comes first, for personal use. The AlcoTrack is a workplace model and is recommended for calibration every 6 months.

Regular calibration helps maintain reliable readings because breathalyser sensors can change gradually over time, even when a device is not used frequently.

How long does alcohol stay in your system, and how long should I wait before driving?

On average the body clears about 1-1.5 standard drink per hour, but this varies
with weight, metabolism, food and health. Nothing speeds it up, including coffee, water or a shower. Owning a breathalyser takes the guess-work out of the equation. You can test yourself anywhere, anytime.

Why can my breathalyser give different readings at different times?

Your BAC naturally changes over time, so different readings do not necessarily mean that your breathalyser is faulty. Alcohol absorption and elimination occur at different rates depending on the individual and circumstances.

Testing technique can also affect results. Always wait at least 20 minutes after drinking before testing and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

If your breathalyser consistently produces unexpected or inconsistent readings, takes much longer than normal to warm up or displays an error message, it may require calibration or servicing.

Yes. AlcoLimit offers free shipping on Australian orders over $200. Orders below $200 are charged at the applicable shipping rate, which is calculated at checkout.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery times depend on your location and the shipping method selected at checkout.  

Express Post typically takes 1-3 days to metro areas. If you need your order urgently we recommend selecting the Startrack Couriers shipping option. Orders are dispatched from Brisbane, Australia and tracking information is sent to your email address at the time of dispatch so you can track your delivery.

What does ‘same day dispatch’ mean?

All orders received by 12pm daily are dispatched the same day (except when we have a promotional sale).
Delivery options include both Parcel Post, Express Post and Courier (extra cost). Delivery time frames vary depending upon your location.
